Night Horses

a huge moon held us
I remember Navajo lands

echoing, re-echoing

night horses neighing, answering
the land's music taking my bones

...................

enforced monuments
great massifs leaning, reaching

night horses calling

we cooked chicken with wine
our campfire — just passing through

....................

the day, dusty August
unfolded burning hunger

then night, the chanted hunt

the desert singing again, coyotes
call out the howl of shooting stars

....................

under the owl's wing
my memory rides the night horses

the moon won't care

living, dying, the tides still flow
but I care, oh, I care

  1. Wow, Lorna, this is exquisitely beautiful. "Under the owl's wing, my memory rides the night horses". What a spectacularly evocative poem.
