The Guitar

The door tries to shut
but night slips in, bit-by-bit
insisting on its down payment —
Old songs, the real blues, re-echo
"take what you need, you think will last"
    the guitar knowing full well,
none of this goes on for long.

Tears evaporate, heartbreak,
a torn Valentine, glides shivering
    down with the leaves.
Old songs, the real blues, re-echo
"the land of dreams" there, where
the heart lets go, and the soul
             becomes music.

2. Louis Armstrong, Basin Street Blues

  1. I enjoyed this a lot, Lorna. I especially like "night slips in, bit-by-bit / insisting on its down payment".

  3. This has a wonderful bluesy cadence. I also like the way you indented some lines - it gives a light touch to the movement of the piece.

  4. Very intriguing first three lines, leaves an amazing image in my mind and then the guitar starts strumming, leaves fall... very nice rhapsody!
