I like the ambiguity of that final line, as it could be the cat or the poem's narrator or even both finding it "so hard to let go". I also like how you relate the elements of nature to one another and the use of the cat, which can be symbolic of fortune to the Chinese.
Thank you for your thoughts. I saw the last line as either or both, as you said. But didn't think of the Chinese symbolism of the cat. What fascinates me is the concept of space in those landscapes. I'll write a little essay on it and post on One Breath Poets.
Oh Lorna....so poignant......these endings are so deeply felt. I love the juxtapositioning of the ancient Chinese landscapes and the elderly cat. Fantastic. My thoughts are with you through this difficult passage.
