December Sleet

Cold, icy rain pulling
all the heat from my bones.
How fast the black clouds
breaking over the Cascades.

I'm thinking of hope—
no sentimental gloss
no slight of hand
no "it's gonna be fine"
the vain pasting over the jittery chasm
all tight and cold...

Hope like a spinning dance
in a Spring wind,
a joyous doggie kind of hope
nosing up and tossing the new snow,
this human at one
with the beach
part of the waves
the prolonged easy beat
coming in slow,
careless under
messaging stars.
