Summer Time

Between two seconds opened
a long, long past summer, one
of those in the heartland, the sun
steaming the fields lush,
the animal of us sunk

Then there was time
stretching forever down
the furrowed rows of nothing to do,
the universe merely the sweet
smell of ripe Maryland cantaloupe.
