what was the word

...the gateway into a never before seen place,
the word, the whole phrase, that slipped away
when the evening winds began?  the hush, hush
of brushed young ponderosa...mammals
together, the cat and I, we lifted our heads...
Surely the passage of a distant ancestor so
dispersed, without roots, limbless, non-specific,
invisible, somehow owning a never ceasing
ebb and flow, moving long before we were
here on earth...this midwife in that long chain,
that led to our coming to be.

  1. This is wonderful, Lorna, especially "this midwife in that long chain that led to our coming to be"!
