The Waters of Lethe

We holographic ghosts,
we walk through the walls of memory,
and how the winds sweep us
from lullaby to dirge, through
the waters of forgetting,
returning to lullaby, rocking,
standing, running again and again.

When dressed in our fanciest
stories, jeweled in wild expectation—
the gamble will pay off,
the lover will change for me,
the war will be easily won—

plumed in big hats of giddy pomp
how can we manifest our angelic core
waiting to unfurl its folded wings?

And, oh, the wild expectation. You're so right!

  2. The first stanza is especially lovely. It stands on its own, I think.
